about

Ramah Jihan wrote this music during long days of domestic construction and demolition in the summer of 2010. Often working in isolation for long periods, he had time to reflect and cope with the successes and failures of love. Having written this music in his head, the intricacies and inner logic of each piece had to be memorized by the end of the day only to be set to the guitar in the evenings, when he returned home. Perhaps this explains the nature of pastiche in the song cycle.

Sharing this music with long time friend and bass player Brett Bakshis established a dynamic, and sophisticated counterpoint. New found friend and composition major, Justin Rodig, provided important tone colors and subtleties to the work that uncovered the trapped doors behind every chord. His wife, Kayleigh Rodig was key in providing a safe space for the group to practice. Cellist, Ira Ochs began working with the group from the start and eventually Marissa Deitz took on this role.

This ambitious ensemble, composed of nylon string guitar, clarinet, cello, xylophone, electric bass, and harmonized tenor vocals, approaches the genre of acoustic chamber pop with a magazine of broken-hearted love songs that interrogate the space between monogamy and polyamory.

Track Name: Wooden Rings
When I was a boy
I dreamed of a love
Who’d rather juniper to diamond

So I reached for your hand
And gathered the wood
From a fallen tree the storms took
Held out my heart by the root

And I feel it wash over me
Falling falling violently
Feel it wash over me
Falling calling tears from me
And I feel it wash over me
Falling falling violently
Oh feel it wash over me
Falling calling tears from me

Well worn and engraved
Familiar but strange
The rings we wore everyday

As is all spread around along shallow ground
Sure changed when the ground froze over
Your skin shone with their oils and fresh poison

Come home and tell me all about it
I’m abuse when you’re excited
Surging through this starving mind like a fever
Oh feel it wash over me
Falling falling violently
Feel it wash over me
Falling calling tears from me

And I feel it wash over me
Falling falling violently
Oh feel it wash over me
Falling calling tears from me

Feel it wash
Feel it wash

How could I get along without a fight?
Tooth and nail, the threat of jail for the night
Could have spared our baby girls such a sight
If there’s one thing I regret…

Oh feel it wash over me
Falling falling violently
Feel it wash over me
Falling calling tears from me
And I feel it wash over me
Falling falling violently
Oh feel it wash over me
Falling calling tears from me

Oh
Oh
Feel it wash
Feel it wash
Track Name: To Let You Go
Alone in my room with the moon
Crashing through my eyes at my window
I draw your skin tightly in a memory against me
As you wander my dreams

How was I supposed to value you a little bit less than
I did though we we unfaithful
The rasp of your voice is warm in my ear still
It feels like wood grain under my palm

I cast a shadow on my life
Standing in your light
Standing in your light
I just didn’t realize I gave so much
To love, to us

We laughed in parallel all night long
We danced in parallel until the dawn
Made love in parallel under the snow
Tears come in parallel to let you go

I tried to drink you away tonight
But in the isle I see your face
How could I escape a tender light
With the knowledge of the love we made?

How was I supposed to value you a little bit less than
I did I was in love
The rasp of you voice is warm in my ear still
Resounds like thunder above

How was I supposed to value you a little bit less than
I did though we we unfaithful
The rasp of you voice is warm in my ear still
It feels like wood grain under my palm

We laughed in parallel all night long
We danced in parallel until the dawn
Made love in parallel under the snow
Tears come in parallel to let you go
To let you go
To let you go
Track Name: The Crash
I glide through the night air
I drive but exhaustion tows my mind

From stripe to white stripe, consumed,
and quickly left behind

Swept up in slow motion
a thundershower of glass

To deploy my body
would free me from my lack

Where am I going?
Not home.
How am I traveling?
Alone.

What if I had just let go?
What if I had just let go?

I would have lost the one…
I’d hoped to know
Track Name: Finding Me
I wish I could say it was all a lie
Working side by side in this house
Where we made our home

I wish I knew from the start
That no earthly point of view
Could house a wandering star

Wish all that talking could save us
But I couldn't say the word I knew
Would mean losing you

If loosing you meant finding me tonight
I have to choose before first light
If loosing you meant finding me tonight
I have to choose before first light
Track Name: When I Knew
I thought this would be the happiest day of my life
Standing in forever
At the wedding isle
With you as my bride

He came with your family from the countryside
No vows could disguise
A love that never died
Guess you chose him that night

Turbulent ride home
Where you tried to kiss me
Under a honey moon

But when I turned away
I knew
Track Name: Bated Breath
Summer sun set a hurried poem
To feed the beasts of night
Heart, flesh, and tone

Beasts lay burdens along my ear
Breath liberate them all
To travel downwind

Carry them far from here
So I can love without fear
I found happiness again
Though I say it with bated breath
Track Name: Your Season
Christmas light bathe my empty house
Black and white moments framed in time
Silver smiles packed just out of sight

I know it was your season
And that must be the reason
I pulled these pictures out

Silver smiles packed just out of sight
Black and white moments framed in time
Christmas light bathe my empty house

I know it was your season
And that must be the reason I pulled these pictures out
All the same, I'm hanging our memories up
For today, I'm hanging our memories up
All the same, I'm hanging our memories up
For today, I'm hanging our memories up
Oh
Track Name: Sky Blue
Come on
Come on
Come on

Come on, come on, can't you see
The grace that is in front of me now?

It's soft, it's calm, it's lying here beside me
Beside me

Now of course it takes a moment of grace
For me to even accept it
However this new mode of sky blue
Has taken to showing me your truth
Track Name: The Long Way
Have you ever gone the long way
Just to see if you can?
Long walks through woods on Sundays
Hand in hand

Had goals and strived to be
Before you met me
Why I put it all on hold I don't know

When I met your family
Honor consumed me
And it made it feel alright to let

Now since the break up I am wielding a broken heart
Have time to measure what is left when we're apart
Learning to truly be alright on my own
With every song I write I hear how I have grown

Have you ever gone the long way
Just to see if you can?
The lessons of life and loving
Bring life again
With my daughter by my side

I will continue to strive
I'm making it alright
Oh
